Theory Test FAQs

What is the UK theory test?

The UK theory test is a mandatory test that all learner drivers must pass before taking the practical driving test. It assesses your understanding of the Highway Code, road signs, and various driving scenarios.

How is the theory test structured?

The theory test is divided into two parts:

  1. Multiple Choice Questions: 50 questions on road safety and driving rules.
  2. Hazard Perception Test: 14 video clips where you must identify developing hazards.

What is the pass mark for the multiple-choice part?

You must correctly answer 43 out of 50 questions to pass. This is 86% of the questions.

What is the pass mark for the hazard perception part?

You must score at least 44 out of 75 points.

What is the overall pass rate for the UK theory test?

The overall pass rate is 46.5%.

How long does the test last?

You have 57 minutes to complete the multiple-choice part. The hazard perception test lasts about 20 minutes.

What happens if you fail one part of the test?

If you fail either the multiple-choice or the hazard perception part, you must retake both parts.

How can I prepare for the test?

Study the official DVSA Highway Code book, and familiarize yourself with road signs, by studying Know Your Traffic Signs book and using our 78 Road Signs flash cards. Also download a theory test app and practice with mock tests to build your confidence.

How often can I retake the theory test if I fail?

There is no limit on how many times you can take the theory test, but you must wait at least 3 working days between attempts.

How long is the theory test pass valid for?

The theory test certificate is valid for 2 years. You must pass your practical driving test within this period; otherwise, you'll need to retake the theory test.

How do I book the theory test?

You can book the theory test online via the official DVSA website. The cost is £23.
